HSE: A quarter of Russians spend more than two-thirds of their income on food

In 2022, one in six Russians, or 17% of residents, had a shortage of funds for food, clothing or shoes. It was reported by the newspaper “News” With reference to data from the School of Economics (School of Economics) Civil Society and Nonprofit Sector Research Center.

Of those in need, 4% admitted that they did not have enough money for food and 13% for clothes or shoes. At the same time, in 2019, almost twice as many people reported lack of money for food – 7% and 16% – for clothes and shoes.

HSE Research Center Director Irina Mersiyanova noted that the elderly began to complain more often that they could not meet their basic needs. Therefore, 27% of older respondents noted a lack of funds for food, clothing and shoes.

A quarter of those surveyed by HSE scientists spend two-thirds of their family income on food, 10% of which is almost all income. In 2021 these numbers were higher – 11% and 20% respectively.

Previously reportedthat 79% of the poorest French have started saving on food because of inflation.
