Japan reduced its reliance on Russian coal last year, and energy companies are looking for alternative suppliers in countries like Indonesia and South Africa. According to the results of 2022, a total of 6.5 million tons of coal was shipped from Russia to Japan.

In February 2023, 230 thousand tons of coal was delivered to Japan, which is 73% less than the same period last year. At the same time, coal from Russia made up only 2% of the total supply. At the same time, coal supplies from Indonesia increased by 28%, from Canada – twice, and from South Africa – almost six times.

According to the publication, many Japanese energy companies have switched to alternative sources of fuel supply in the past year. However, the cost of purchasing coal nearly tripled during the year to $378 per ton.
