Kadri Simson, Member of the European Commission for Energy, said that the European Council has proposed to EU countries to limit gas purchases from Russia and Belarus. Announced this after EU Energy Council meeting, reports Reuters.
According to him, Europe will no longer return to the situation where Russia is the main gas supplier to the EU.
Former EU member states approved 15% extension of voluntary reduction of gas consumption. The document was adopted by the EU Council of Energy Ministers.
According to the European Commission, from August 2022 to January 2023, EU countries reduced their gas consumption by 19% compared to the average consumption level over the past five years. The target was 15%. In some countries the decrease was 40%.
Economist Tilak Doshi said that as a result of the sanctions against Russia, the United States, which has good energy and other natural resources, will gain a comparative advantage against “vassal” Europe. According to the economist, erosion in energy demand will lead to deindustrialization and a sharp decline in living standards in the EU.
