Coal deliveries abroad via Russian ports in 2022 were profitable despite the strengthening of the ruble. In this respect writer Kommersant cites data from the Infoline report on coal export logistics.
The document shows that the supply of coal abroad through Russian ports in 2022 is profitable. The highest profitability of exports to China and India was observed when delivered from Far East terminals (22-25% depending on terminal and car type). However, the ratio is very different for different directions. Thus, the northwestern ports became the least profitable, given the cessation of exports to Europe.
According to Infoline, export positions in Taman port increased sharply. Accordingly, we are talking about the profitability of supplies to China and India as 12.5-14.2% in January 2023. At the same time, Taman’s main advantage was that the port was able to load Capesize bulk carriers, where the ship lot size could reach 220 thousand tons. In addition, the freight cost from Taman is almost 1.6 times lower than from ports in the northwest direction.
According to Mikhail Burmistrov, head of Infoline-Analytics, transportation from the Kemerovo region decreased last year, and the East test site will not be able to grow this year due to infrastructure restrictions.
27 February Consulate General of the Russian Federation Harbin reportedIn the first 40 days of 2023, China tripled its coal imports from Russia through its main border checkpoint, Zabaikalsk-Manchuria. According to the Consulate General, coal from Russia is used by China for power generation in the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning and the eastern part of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
