The increase in coal prices in Poland in the last year varied between 100% and 200%. In this respect writer The Rzeczpospolita newspaper cites data from the Industrial Development Agency.
“Coal production in Poland is falling again despite the Polish politicians’ statements about the increase. Imports increase because the demand structure is not suitable for supply. The publication noted that coal prices for the Polish energy sector increased by 100% on an annual basis in 2022, and by 200% for heat supply.
The article added that the Polish coal price index for energy in December 2022 was PLN 535.13 per tonne. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this value increased by 100 percent. The price index for heating coal was PLN 1,193.24 per tonne, which is 200% more than in December 2021.
In early February, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki promise Direct Russian assets frozen in the country to reduce the cost of gas and electricity for Poles. According to Morawiecki, he could offer to buy gas or coal with these funds, “thereby lowering prices for all Poles.” He also urged the Polish opposition to vote in favor of the resolution.
Wieslaw Ruzanski, President of UPEMI (Meat Industry Producers and Employers Association), said that farmers in Poland are reducing the number of pigs due to rising energy prices. For this reason, the number of animals has decreased to a minimum in the last 77 years.
