Reuters reported On Sunday, German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall expressed its readiness to “significantly increase production of tank and artillery munitions”. The company will increase its production to meet high demand in Ukraine and the West. The company may also start production of HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems in Germany.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger briefed the agency before Germany’s defense industry chiefs, who will meet with the new Defense Minister Boris Pistorius for the first time. The exact date of the meeting has not yet been announced.
Having exhausted the German armed forces, which has donated weapons to Ukraine for nearly a year, Pistorius plans to start negotiations on how to accelerate the purchase of weapons and increase the supply of ammunition with this meeting. .
Rheinmetall is best known for producing the 120mm gun for the Leopard 2 tank.
“We can produce 240,000 tank shells (120 mm) per year, which is more than the world needs,” Papperger told Reuters.
He added that the production capacity of 155 mm artillery shells could be increased to 450,000-500,000 per year, which would make Rheinmetall the largest producer of both types of ammunition.
Papperger said Rheinmetall has produced between 60,000 and 70,000 tank and artillery shells in 2022, and production can be increased immediately. He said that after Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the demand for these ammunition increased rapidly.
