Europe needs to abandon its dependence on energy resources from Russia as soon as possible. This was stated by Swedish Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Ebba Bush, at the European Parliament’s profile committee, RIA Novosti reported.
“We need to get rid of our dependence on Russian fossil fuels as soon as possible,” Bush said.
Sweden has held the rotating presidency of the Council of Europe since 1 January 2023. The presidential term of the country is six months. Bush voiced the Swedish presidential program at the European Parliament’s Industry and Energy Commission.
Earlier, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that Russia reduced its natural gas supply to European countries by 80 percent in the eight months of last year. He explained that EU countries are able to change these volumes without a power outage.
The head of the European Commission also stated that the European Union plans to invest €300 billion in the development of green energy against the background of the rejection of Russian energy sources. According to him, the European Commission is preparing an urgent structural reform for the European energy market. It is assumed that the reform should change the equilibrium of the market.
British Prime Minister-designate Liz Truss had previously warned the British of a protracted energy crisis. As the head of the British Foreign Office stated, the kingdom needs to strive to accelerate its transition to “green” energy, including the construction of nuclear power plants. Truss did not exclude that due to the rejection of Russian energy sources, London may return to the development of oil and gas fields in the North Sea.
