After a press release from the credit institution, Gazprombank warned its customers that they will not be able to make cross-border transfers in US dollars as of January 27. They announced that it was the American banks – JPMorgan Chase Bank and Bank of New York Mellon – that unilaterally stopped serving Gazprombank’s correspondent accounts in US dollars.
“Therefore, we ask customers not to use Gazprombank for cross-border transfers in US dollars from January 27,” the message reads.
Gazprombank will also continue to provide services for deposits and accounts in US dollars, as well as cross-border transfers in other currencies, the statement said.
“All obligations to customers are fully fulfilled in all currencies, citizens and companies have constant access to their funds and services,” the message emphasizes.
A source close to Gazprombank told socialbites.ca that the bank’s status has not changed.
“These are not new sanctions, not SWIFT disconnection, not account freeze. Only the specified American banks will stop serving our correspondent accounts from January 27 and that’s it. They are doing it, not us, we are not closing anything. They suspended the service, ”the source said.
According to him, the bank does not plan to convert US dollars into anything or close accounts.
“We are not able to make US dollar transfers yet. Apart from this, there are no special changes for customers. Likewise, you can save dollars in your accounts, exchange them in the bank, withdraw cash in accordance with the instructions of the Central Bank, etc. This event does not affect the service in other currencies. Bankers and government, “Many customers have switched to currencies of long-standing friendly countries, as they have long warned that using the dollar is risky.”
