Yogurt producers in Russia complain of lack of raw materials due to sanctions, reports “Kommersant”.
The publication says that for the three quarters of 2022, the production of the product has fallen due to the drop in demand. Also, manufacturers fear the lack of modified starches used as thickeners in puddings and yogurts. Experts assure that until now the problem of shortage of raw materials can be solved by changing the recipes and increasing the cost.
A dairy source told the newspaper that thickeners are mostly imported from Western countries and that their supply has been halted due to sanctions linked to military operations in Ukraine. The interlocutor of the publication noted that the situation threatens to reduce the production of sweets and yoghurts, since such starches are not produced enough in Russia and substitutes are difficult to find in other countries.
Another source is sure that the problem is more severe for certain product categories, but it will be possible to find alternative ingredients for most products.
