Alexander Shevelev, General Director of JSC Severstal Management, in an interview with socialbites.ca denied the information that nails are almost not produced in Russia and must be purchased. Earlier, the spokesperson of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, said at the plenary meeting that Russia’s import of nails, despite metal production in the country, was a discovery for her.

Severstal-Metiz has been manufacturing nails for over 55 years. In 2021, the total production of this product was 9 thousand tons, of which only 2 thousand were exported. Thus, Severstal-Metiz’s nail share in the domestic market is 8%. At the same time, 77% of nails on the Russian market are produced domestically, and only 23% are imported (Belarus and China were the main suppliers in 2020. They supplied the country with 84.3% and 10.7% of total imports. – approx. ed. ). For export, domestic manufacturers supply about 21 thousand tons, that is, 23% of the total volume of nails produced in the Russian Federation.

According to the company’s general manager, there is currently no shortage of nail production capacity on the market.

“In case of an increase in demand, we are ready to meet new demands at the expense of 25-30% capacity reserve, depending on the specific product,” Shevelev said.

Earlier, the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation told RIA Novosti that a sufficient number of nails are produced in Russia, and the import of this product affects only a narrow segment.
