A car radiator can fail due to engine overheating or corrosion. Alexey Balashov, director of service and spare parts at Avilon Mercedes-Benz, told socialbites.ca. In some cases the radiator explodes.
“Among the main reasons for radiator failure is engine overheating. The pressure inside the radiator increases, which can cause cracks or ruptures in it. Corrosion can also cause radiator failure. Over time, due to the reaction of antifreeze with metal, rust forms inside, its walls weaken and leakage occurs,” said Balashov.
According to him, lack of coolant can also lead to radiator failure. If the antifreeze level in the system is low, there is a possibility of air entering the system. This creates hot spots there and increases the risk of radiator damage and leakage.
Malfunction of the thermostat (a device that constantly maintains a constant temperature – socialbites.ca) also increases the pressure in the vehicle’s cooling system. The automobile expert stated that the radiator could explode as a result.
The expert warned that to prevent radiator failure, it is important to regularly check the coolant level, monitor the condition of the cooling system and carry out regular maintenance.
