When washing a car engine, it is important to be careful and follow a number of basic rules. Improper use can damage electronic components, wires, hoses and other components. This is what Avilon Mercedes-Benz service director Alexey Balashov told socialbites.ca.
“First of all, you need to wait for the engine to cool down completely. You should never wash a hot engine. This can damage electronics, plastic parts, and cause burns from hot water and steam. Then you need to close the fuses, ignition coils, connectors and other sensitive elements. It is better to use special covers or plastic film for this. The exhaust pipe should also be closed to prevent water from getting inside, Balashov said.
During the process itself, a special engine detergent should be used directly. They are usually available in concentrated solutions that need to be diluted with water.
It is recommended to wash the engine under medium water pressure. At high pressure there is a risk of disconnecting wires, hoses and other elements, as well as damaging fragile engine parts. In this regard, the expert said that you should not use a steam jet cleaner: high pressure and hot steam can damage electronic components, cables and hoses, as well as lead to corrosion of metal parts.
Also, do not direct the water jet directly at electronic components, connectors and other sensitive elements. Water may damage them and cause a short circuit.
As for the drying process, it is recommended to dry the engine with compressed air. The expert explained that it also makes sense to make sure that there is no water left in the electronic units and connectors.
