In the US state of Alabama, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Co used the labor of immigrant children, informs Reuters agency.
Child labor was used at the metal stamping plant of SMART Alabama LLC, which supplies parts to the Montgomery-based auto manufacturing facility at Hyundai’s flagship assembly plant in the United States. According to US law, only citizens over the age of 18 can work in such places.
Reuters learned that child labor was employed after a 13-year-old girl briefly disappeared from the home of a Guatemalan immigrant family in Alabama in February 2022. He worked in a factory with his siblings for 12 and 15 years. This information was confirmed to the agency by the police.
According to factory workers, these children were among many underage workers at the factory over the past few years. The Alabama Department of Labor has launched an investigation into illegally employed children.
