Next year, it will be possible to use a driver’s license, foreign passport and electronic passport to enter hotels through EPGU. The Ministry of Economic Development has finalized a draft decision expanding the list of documents required for registration in hotels, the newspaper writes “News”.
Changes to the Rules for the Provision of Hotel Services will make it possible to conclude a contract with a hotel not only on the basis of a passport, but also on the basis of other documents. This innovation aims to simplify the process of settling and registering citizens of the Russian Federation, allowing the use of more documents to verify identity, including electronic forms. The new rules are expected to come into force on July 1.
The idea of expanding the list of documents has been discussed for a long time. Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Boris Chernyshov noted that there are many alternatives to the passport, including a driver’s license and QR codes from the State Service. However, the proposal to compromise with pension documents did not find support.
Airlines also advocated the possibility of checking in using a foreign passport. Travelers note that a Russian internal passport is not required abroad and may not even be worth taking with you.
In case of flight cancellation or delay, travelers need the opportunity to stay at the hotel, which is currently difficult without a Russian passport.
There are situations where not having a passport can be problematic. For example, if a person is going to a neighboring city without the intention of spending the night there and suddenly encounters a car breakdown. In such cases, the ability to use a driver’s license to check into a hotel will be very useful.
