Starting September 1, 2024, private car travel from Mongolian regions to the capital Ulaanbaatar will become charged. This decision aims to reduce traffic congestion by 5%, it writes TASS referring to the mayor’s office.
Owners of vehicles with regional plates will be required to pay a toll to enter the city. A stay in Ulaanbaatar for up to 48 hours will cost 1,000 tugriks (about $0.28). If the trip lasts more than two days, you will have to pay 5,000 tugriks (about $1.6) for each subsequent day.
Authorities plan that such an innovation will solve the long-standing traffic congestion problem that the capital faces. Every day, 16 to 19 thousand cars from the regions can be seen on the streets of Ulaanbaatar, and during the holidays this number increases to 38 thousand.
According to city officials, the introduction of the toll will reduce the number of cars by 5%, and the funds collected will be spent on road maintenance and repair. Earlier, Ulaanbaatar Mayor Khishgeegiin Nyambaatar proposed limiting the import of passenger cars and issuing new license plates to combat traffic congestion.
Traffic congestion in Ulaanbaatar has been a problem for many years due to population growth, the increase in the number of vehicles and errors in road infrastructure design. According to statistics, city residents spend an average of 2.5 hours a day in traffic congestion, which is equivalent to 35 days a year. By 2024, economic opportunities lost due to traffic congestion could reach 10% of the country’s GDP.
Previously was named a way to save money on toll roads.
