In cold weather, the car’s engine, transmission and other important components may fail. Mikhail Kolodochkin, technical expert of Za Rulem magazine, told socialbites.ca.
“When driving a cold car, the first thing that can be damaged is the engine. Pistons heat up extremely unevenly, and if you leave the garden and press the gas sharply, they can fall apart due to temperature changes and thermal stress. The second thing that can fail is the gearbox. Unlike the engine, it only gets hot while driving. The ice pieces don’t fit well together, so you need to move smoothly, giving the units a chance to adjust. This applies to all types of transmission,” Kolodochkin said.
If severe frosts occur and summer oil is spilled into the engine, the starter will not be able to crank the crankshaft. The expert warned that first a strong current will flow, because of which there will be a short circuit for the starter, and then it may fail.
It is also worth paying attention to the internal heating system according to Kolodochkin. In subzero weather, it is important to direct the air flow to the windshield when starting the engine, thus allowing the glass to gradually melt. If you heat the interior first and then direct the hot air to the glass, it may explode.
There are times when tires crack. This happens in conditions of severe frost, on used tires, when the driver starts the car that has been parked all night and suddenly stops. The expert explained that to avoid this effect, for the first five minutes you need to drive at a minimum speed, allowing the tires to warm up to operating temperature.
