St. Petersburg police detected an organized criminal group with the participation of employees of the interregional registration and examination departments (MREO) of the traffic police. In this respect reports Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in St. Main Directorate of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region.
Members of the group created private websites where they offered to provide a fast, queue-free car registration service in exchange for a monetary reward, according to the department. Part of the income received was transferred to MREO traffic police officials. The Ministry of Internal Affairs said that according to preliminary estimates, revenue from the illegal scheme for this year amounted to “tens of millions of rubles”.
On the morning of September 20, the police conducted more than 30 searches at the residences of suspected defendants, as well as at the offices of commercial firms and inter-district registration examination offices. Investigators opened a criminal case under Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (taking bribes).
