Services for the restoration of steering racks, generators and starters, suspension elements and braking systems are offered by many specialized companies in Russia. In some cases, it is possible to return the performance of catalytic converters, as well as particulate filters, which are expensive elements of the exhaust system using precious metals, such as reconstruction market specialists (restoration of auto parts), interviewed by socialbites.ca.
Alexander Pakhomov, chairman of the board of the Auto Service Association, explains in an interview with socialbites.ca that modern cars require special repair equipment.
“For example, modern generators have such an open body that if you try to remove a bearing from it without a special puller, you will most likely break it.”
Restoring such a node costs up to 20% of the price of a new one, while the repaired generator will last quite a long time (up to 80% of the uptime of the new one), he adds. Pakhomov estimates the resource of a qualitatively restored steering rack in a similar period, but this task is more difficult and only qualified specialists can do it:
requires the use of industrial equipment, including lathes and grinders.
In automobile generators, bearings must be replaced if necessary. You can repair or replace the diode bridge or winding, as well as grind worn slip rings. If the steering racks are corroded, they are subject to grinding or turning, depending on the depth of the damage, and leaky oil seals can be selected from the catalogues.
Among the offers on the market are services for the restoration of worn silent blocks (rubber-metal hinges in the suspension). When repairing, the cracked elastic element is removed and a new polyurethane is poured. However, the design of components and assemblies of modern cars is such that sometimes special care is required for disassembly and repair so that this operation does not result in eventual failure.
What should not be restored
Attempts to reuse modern filters with paper filter elements are considered impossible by the head of the Auto Services Association: they cannot be cleaned of particles absorbed by cardboard. There is no prospect of recovery of catalysts either. But it is quite possible to remove soot from the clogged particulate filter of a diesel car using special chemistry, but more often car owners remove the “environmentally friendly” part itself.
Catalytic converters for gasoline vehicles are mainly damaged if unburned fuel or oil residues get into the exhaust system. Specialized firms estimate the catalyst cleaning service at 2-3 thousand rubles. True, this procedure is not always successful:
if the working surface of the catalyst melts due to high temperature, the assembly can no longer be repaired.
“Silent blocks in modern cars are configured to have different stiffnesses when running in different directions. And the restored one filled with polyurethane will be the same. Because of this, the steering characteristics of the suspension will suffer a little, but the car will drive smoothly, ”says Pakhomov.
The operability of the tie rod ends and ball joints in the suspension is restored by injecting a special high-pressure polymer material into the assembly, which selects the resulting gap.

“When the game just comes out and the geometry of the ball is not broken, it is necessary to repair the ball joint – then the part will serve for a long time, almost like a new one,” Volpert explains to socialbites.ca. “We fill it with graphite-filled polyamide, in which graphite acts as a lubricant.”
He adds that if the wear of the part is significant due to dirt entering the assembly and the resulting corrosion, the service life of the remanufactured part will be significantly reduced. Restoring a tie rod end or ball joint will cost about 1.5-2 thousand rubles.
