When buying a car, the issue of mileage is one of the most important. To find out if the readings on the odometer are real, you can calculate the average mileage, which depends on the operating conditions, the city in which the car is located and the time of operation. If the figure is suspiciously low, there is a possibility that the mileage is twisted.
In addition, the “corrected” mileage of a car is sometimes detected by non-obvious signs, warned the head of the autocriminal expertise center Maxim Shelkov.
For example, traces of disassembly of the dashboard are visible on some cars, which may indicate that changes have been made to the mileage.
The expert recommends, when buying a used car, to study the regulations for its maintenance and the maintenance performed at each mileage interval.
“We have to look at the wear of the drive tensioners, alternator belt, brake discs and pads. The next step is to inspect the interior, the degree of cloudiness of the headlights, the number of chips on the bumper. However, it is important to understand here that operating conditions may be different,” Shelkov noted.
It is not worth focusing as before on wear on the steering wheel and other signs of interior wear, the expert added, explaining that detailing services and professional auto chemicals can hide traces of operation.
