Carlos Tavares, head of the Stellantis automobile concern (which combines Peugeot-Citroen and Fiat-Chrysler), urged EU officials to take action due to the impending fierce competition with Chinese automakers in the European market. First of all, this concerns electric cars. About informs Automotive News Europe.
“The price difference between European and Chinese cars is significant. If nothing changes in the current situation, middle-class European buyers will increasingly turn to Chinese models. On the sidelines of the CES electronics trade show in Las Vegas, the purchasing power of many people in Europe was noticeably reduced,” Tavares said.
According to Tavares, Europe’s practice of regulating emissions does not benefit European automakers. Electric vehicles produced in Europe are 40% more expensive than products from Chinese companies. If the European market remains open, local manufacturers will have to compete directly with Chinese car companies, which will lead to unpopular decisions – reducing capacity and transferring production, Stellantis’ chairman said.
According to him, European solar panel manufacturers have already lost the competition against China and the situation in the auto industry could follow the same scenario and if restrictions are imposed, European automakers will have a hard time working in China.
“Ultimately, this challenge is like squaring a circle. Under the current circumstances, if nothing is done in the European Union, there will be a terrible struggle,” concluded Carlos Tavares.
Earlier it was known that Peugeot. introduced electric concept car with steering wheel in the form of a joystick.
