This test was conducted in the US and we are interested in its results. We compared used Michelin CrossClimate 2 all-season tires (test leaders from Benson) and new budget Tomket Allyear tires, the price of which is identical.
The tread depth of the CrossClimate 2 tires was 2.2 millimeters at the time of testing. They have covered 4,000 km since they were mounted on a car. Tomket Allyear tires covered the same distance before testing. The cars were identical – two Volkswagen Golf.
Despite the tread depth, the Michelin tires used made it possible to complete a lap on a snowy track faster than the Tomket. Budget tires disappointed by understeer.
On wet roads it was less clear. Judging by the stopwatch numbers, the new Tomkets were a little faster on the lap. The Michelin tires, when not aquaplaned, significantly improved traction and handling. Tomket, on the other hand, seemed constantly on the verge of collapse.
On dry roads, the Michelin tires outperformed the new Tomket in every respect. Tires usually get better as they wear (but only on dry surfaces), since the smaller the tread, the less the blocks run during maneuvers.
The conclusion is unequivocal – used premium tires are better, but you need to understand that in rainy weather they will lose to tires with a deeper profile. In addition, the reduced tread depth of worn tires means that they cannot be used for as long as new ones.
