As has been noted more than once, there are plenty of tires in Russia, including winter tires, which means that we have plenty to choose from and we don’t have to take “what is”. Consequently, the choice stress remains with us, but the tire tests of Za Rulem, the oldest and most authoritative automotive publication in Russia, help with this.
For the 2022-2023 winter season, the magazine’s experts Dmitry Testov and Sergey Mishin tested eight sets of studded winter tires in different price categories – from 4,000 to 8,500 rubles per bottle.
The following took part in the tests:
- Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 (Finland);
- Bridgestone Blizzak IceRussia);
- Continental Viking Contact 7 (Russia);
- Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice 2 (Poland);
- Pirelli IceZero FRRussia);
- Nordman RS2 (Russia);
- Nankang Ice Assets Ice-1 (China);
- Cordiant Winter Drive 2 (Russia).
Nankang Ice Assets Ice-1 in the test turned out to be one of the most affordable. At the time of the test, they cost 4300 rubles. Only Cordiant is cheaper (4100 rubles).
Chinese tire test results nankang Ice active Ice-1 turned out to be very “interesting”, despite the double mention of ice cream in the title (Ice). But, judging by the number “1”, this is the company’s first test nankangand the tires will get better in the future.
So why are these tires worse than the competition?

The tests started with an examination of the degree of longitudinal attachment. Simply put, the acceleration to 20 km/h and the braking distance from 20 to 5 km/h were evaluated. Continental tires led the way here, while Nankang tires were 11% worse (the most modest results in the test).

In this test, the time of passing a circle with a diameter of 27 m was measured. The leaders were Hakkapeliitta R5 and the outsiders were Nankang again. With them, the car obeys the steering wheel worse and slides longer than others.

During tests of acceleration to 40 km/h and braking of this speed to 5 km/h, three leaders were identified: Continental, Nokian and Pirelli. Nankang has the worst result. But in this case the result differed by only a small 5%.

Driving the lap in the snow revealed the car’s lazy reactions to the steering wheel with the Nankang tires. The driver feels insecure with them.
Expert conclusion:
— China’s Nankang Ice Activa Ice-1 falls into the mediocre category in tests. Despite the presence of the word “ice cream” in the title, this coating is not beneficial. Like the snow that is rolled, that has fallen fresh. The noisiest, heaviest band and wasteful. Suitable for well-cleaned roads. A short drive is allowed on slippery surfaces, always with working ABS and ESP. Drive slowly, taking turns in a “whisper”. With such consumer properties, the low price is no excuse.
