Terminal Replacement Procedure
The old terminal just needs to be cut off. Next – strip a small part of the wire and inspect the condition of the wires. If they are oxidized, they need to be cleaned. Even better, tin them with tin with a powerful soldering iron.
Then you can clamp the end of the wire in the clamp, which is adapted for this type of fastening. If the wire ends with a ring terminal, all you need to do is attach it to the new tip. If the entire wire is severely damaged, it should be replaced with a commercially available two terminal wire.
And then apply the tip that scored high in our test.
Which terminal should be removed first?
When performing work, it makes sense to disconnect both poles and sometimes even remove the battery. But in any case, first it is better to turn off the “ground” wire. The explanation is simple: it reduces the chance of an accidental short circuit when working with a metal tool.
If you disconnect the positive terminal first, you may accidentally “short” the battery’s positive terminal to a nearby “metal” – the circuit is done. And when disconnecting the “ground” wire, this can not happen.
How to clean?
In the Zhiguli era, a weak sandpaper helped – although there is a risk that hard abrasive particles will penetrate the soft metal, causing the contact to deteriorate.
There is also a more brutal device for sale: a special “cleaner” (photo).
Radical products are also suitable for machine cleaning.
A gentler method is a soda solution and a cloth.
