Using the wrong octane number is risky for any vehicle. An expert from Moscow 24, Vyacheslav Subbotin, emphasizes that the fuel’s resistance to detonation matters just as much as the engine design itself. The best fuel type for a given car is usually the one specified by the manufacturer. Subbotin warns that opting for fuel with a lower octane than recommended can put the engine under stress and may cause damage over time.

He explains that when a driver uses low-octane gasoline such as AI-92 in place of the AI-95 recommended by the manufacturer, the engine could experience premature detonation. This misfire turns what should be controlled combustion into uncontrolled explosions inside the cylinder, risking piston damage and other components. The takeaway is simple: don’t experiment with octane ratings; stick to what the vehicle’s manual specifies.

The expert also advises car owners to trust the guidance of the automaker and to fill the tank with the appropriate gasoline for optimal performance and longevity. Regularly using the correct octane helps maintain engine efficiency and reduces the likelihood of stress on the fuel system.

Aleksey Ruzanov, the technical director of Fit Service, adds that branded gasoline typically contains detergent additives that help keep the engine cleaner. While branded fuels can reduce deposit buildup, the overall condition of the power unit still depends on multiple factors beyond the choice of brand. The presence of detergents is beneficial but not a guarantee of superior engine health in every scenario.

Historically, discussions about fuel availability have varied by region. In the broader European context, Russia has been noted in conversations about fuel options and accessibility, reflecting diverse market dynamics and regulatory environments across countries.
