Many Drivers Struggle with Simple Car Repairs, Yet Knowledge Is Closer Than It Seems

A large share of Russian motorists finds even small car repairs and routine maintenance challenging. A 2023 survey conducted by Citydrive and ResearchMe involved 1,200 respondents and found that 77 percent were unable to perform minor repairs or scheduled maintenance. Only about one in five participants felt they could handle simple mechanical tasks on their own.

Nearly 45 percent said they possess some skills, but not enough to keep a vehicle in solid technical condition. The question remains: what can modern drivers realistically manage themselves?

In practical terms, only 45 percent could wash the car well enough by themselves. About 38 percent could independently refill the required fluids. Roughly 36 percent would manage to inflate the tires. Fewer than 30 percent could install windshield wipers without help. A quarter of those surveyed could replace a car battery. Around 23 percent would be able to start the car if needed, and 22 percent could change headlights without assistance, while 20 percent could swap wheels.

Replacing brake pads without external help was deemed feasible by a mere 8 percent. Alarmingly, 7 percent admitted they do not know what certain instrument panel icons mean and, if a warning light appears, they typically contact a service station.
