Spring Car Care: A Practical Guide to Refreshing Your Vehicle After Winter

The operation of a car in winter involves abrupt temperature shifts and the impact of anti-icing chemicals on vehicle components. As warmer weather returns, it becomes important to inspect the chassis and braking system. This is the view shared by Pavel Konstantinov, head of Avilon FAW service and spare parts, in a conversation with Gazeta reported by Ru.

If a car owner notes steering issues, a camber and toe adjustment may be needed, according to Konstantinov.

change oil

Alexey Ruzanov, technical director of Fit Service, an international automotive service network, notes that with spring’s arrival it is wise to replace engine oil and the oil filter to help extend engine life.

Winter condensation within the sump, caused by temperature swings, can form an emulsion that compromises lubrication of engine parts, Ruzanov explains to socialbites.ca.

Condensation can also accumulate in the fuel tank, and this can reach the engine via the gasoline, making flushing the fuel system advisable, the source adds.

When temperatures dip below zero, oil thickens and it takes longer for the lubricant to reach all the critical points in the engine, leading to higher oil consumption. As a result, spring servicing or refilling is recommended, according to socialbites.ca and Avtodom’s press service.

chassis

Ruzanov from Fit Service suggests that residents of large cities, especially Moscow, should wash the underside of their vehicles and clean suspension components of winter grime in preparation for spring. Winter driving and anti-icing reagents can take a toll on the chassis.

Frost, reagents, and potholes can degrade suspension components. Rubber and metal parts may become worn, and oil seals can take on moisture damage, Ruzanov notes.

Attention should also be paid to wiper blades, and to ensuring the washer pump and hoses are functioning properly, as they are prone to freezing and leaks after winter driving.

Possible overheating

At Veshnyaki Auto’s technical center, the chief concern after winter is an overheating engine caused by a dirty radiator. Air conditioning heat exchangers also accumulate grime and must be cleaned before warm weather arrives.

Overheating often starts with radiator contamination. When temperatures rise, the radiator carries a heavier load and the car may overheat. The first step is to arrange a service visit to wash the radiators both for the cooling system and the air conditioner, Shabunin explains in a conversation with socialbites.ca.

He notes that most dirt collects in the space between the cooling and air-conditioning radiators, and sometimes these parts must be removed to thoroughly clean them. In spring it is beneficial to replace the cabin filter, which can harbor moisture from winter, and to apply antibacterial and antifungal agents to the air-conditioner radiator in the passenger compartment. This can be done in a service center or at home with commercially available sprays and clear instructions.

brakes

Ruzanov emphasizes that the failure of a single braking or suspension component can cause other parts to fail. If brake pads wear out completely, the brake disc can be damaged, dramatically increasing repair costs.

Shabunin from Veshnyaki Auto notes the importance of checking brake fluid moisture after winter because brake fluid is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture during cold months. Spring maintenance should include testing the moisture level in the brake fluid.

Additionally, cleaning brake mechanisms from salt, sand, and winter grime with the proper tools is essential to ensure reliable braking, Konstantinov adds.

Body

Konstantinov warns that pollutants deposited on chrome surfaces during winter can lead to later corrosion if not removed. After winter, chrome areas should be cleaned with suitable pastes or treated at a workshop to prevent damage and maintain a polished look.

Shabunin adds that frequent snow removal brushes and headlight wiping can cause cloudy lenses. It is prudent to inspect for paint defects and polish headlights if needed. With spring, applying a protective liquid glass coating to the body can help preserve shine and protection.

tires

Avtodom’s press service notes that once the daily average temperature reaches about 7 C, winter tires should be replaced with summer tires and wheels balanced to maximize stability and handling. The decision should be guided by temperature rather than snow cover alone, according to Fit Service’s Aleksey Ruzanov.

He adds that the market has stabilized as seasonal tire lines adjust to new conditions. While some brands have left the market, new players, including several Chinese brands, have entered the scene, reflecting available choices for drivers.
