The tense situation in the Russian tire market that emerged in the spring of 2022 raises several questions about the coming winter season. Many manufacturers halted production or deliveries to the Russian Federation, and some exited the market altogether. Are alternative tire supply chains already functioning in the country? Will imported winter tires be enough for everyone? Behind the Wheel asked an industry expert to weigh in.

Industry expert from Avtodom Altufyevo comments on the current landscape:

With only a small number of new car sales, the demand for winter tires is expected to be steady but modest.

The annual demand for tires averages around 4 million units. Based on last year’s inventories, the stock should cover about 1.5 to 2 years, making a shortage unlikely in the near term.

Chinese manufacturers currently supply roughly a quarter of the Russian market. The tires offered are reliable in quality and affordable in price. There is also enough supply in the premium segment to meet existing demand.

Tire prices have stabilized. A noticeable price spike occurred only in April 2022, after which prices began to decline. In July, the average tire price dropped by about 10.6%, reaching the lowest point in six months.

These observations align with a recent Chestny Znak study, which shows that at the start of the current season Russia’s winter tire stock stands at 33 million units, about 43% higher than before last winter. Considering the softer new car market, this level effectively rules out a shortage scenario.

  • Imports account for roughly 35% of tires, with shipments coming mainly from three countries.
