In Russia, 2023 nine-month results show rising share of accidents involving Chinese cars

Data from the VSK Insurance Corporation indicate that between January and September 2023, accidents involving Chinese vehicles on Russian roads accounted for 3.2% of all traffic incidents. That share marks an increase from the same period a year earlier, when incidents involving Chinese cars represented roughly 1.7% of all accidents. Among China-made vehicles, Changan drivers stood out as the least likely to be involved in an incident, a pattern observed across the market share and safety track records of various brands.

Further breakdown highlights the brands most affected by accidents. Chery led the list with about a quarter of the incidents among Chinese brands, at 25.4%, followed by Geely at 16.9% and Haval at 14.5%. The report also notes that Changan vehicles, despite strong sales, show the lowest accident involvement rate, not exceeding about 1% of the incidents within the Chinese-brand cohort.

Among specific models, Chery Tiggo 7 Pro crossovers were most frequently involved in accidents, according to the data. Geely’s Coolray SUV tops the Geely table for incident frequency, while Haval’s Jolion is cited as the leading model in its brand’s accident statistics. These model-level insights help illustrate which vehicles contribute most to the overall figures within their respective brands.

Age appears to play a significant role in risk levels. The analysis identifies drivers aged 30 to 39 as the most dangerous segment among Chinese-car operators, accounting for 24.1% of incidents. In contrast, drivers under 30 are comparatively more cautious, representing no more than 8% of accidents involving Chinese cars.

From a financial perspective, the average compensation for accidents involving Chinese cars in 2023 stood at 73,000 rubles. The figures offer a lens into the typical cost consequences tied to insurance claims for these vehicles on Russian roads during the period examined. The data contribute to a broader understanding of risk exposure and insurance planning for owners of Chinese-brand cars in the region.

Overall, the study highlights shifting patterns in the presence of Chinese-brand vehicles on Russian highways. It emphasizes that while some brands exhibit higher accident shares, others show relatively stronger safety records. The results underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring, vehicle safety improvements, and targeted driver awareness efforts to mitigate risk across the market for Chinese automotive brands in Russia.
