The capabilities of cameras used for recording traffic violations go far beyond what is typically employed today. In practice, the system designed for the traffic police and the cameras deployed by Astralab are built with a broad feature set that can be activated when needed. The company’s general director, Sergey Laskin, explained that nothing in the core software prevents enabling any of these functions should authorities request it.

Among the included features there is a function labeled as a “dangerous driving” mode. The underlying algorithms already recognize conduct that can be categorized as high-risk or reckless on the road, including patterns that signal repeated aggressive lane changes or rapid accelerations. Implementing this capability, however, requires assessment over extended stretches of roadway to ensure accuracy and to minimize false positives.

Another concealed capability relates to monitoring the following distance. There is currently no formal mandate for such a metric in Russian enforcement practice, yet it remains a latent option within the system’s toolkit, as noted by an industry interlocutor.

The neural network that underpins the cameras can also distinguish vehicles by size, which allows for conditional performance based on vehicle class. For example, different speed-limit rules can be applied to compact cars, mid-size sedans, and larger vehicles when the system is configured for such segmentation.

Requires 7,000 tires in popular sizes

Public order and the capacity to respond to emergencies depend on reliable transport. Without functional tires, essential services cannot operate, and aid cannot reach those in need.

In collaboration with the Popular Front, the program Behind the Wheel has begun fundraising to secure tires for a range of official vehicles. The effort targets cars used by the People’s Police and allied operational services within the LPR and DPR, including ambulances, emergency vehicles, humanitarian aid delivery units, and military transport. Contributions can be made through the designated collection page.

The involvement reflects a broader commitment to maintaining mobility for critical responders and improving road safety through better-equipped fleets.
