New Funding Spares No Time in Advancing the M-12 Highway

The government has approved an additional 50 billion rubles to speed the construction of the M-12 federal highway, enabling work to move forward on a tighter schedule. The decision to allocate the funds was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, signaling strong political backing for the project.

By the end of June, 28 billion rubles of the total allocation had already been funneled to accelerate critical sections of the M-12, reflecting a sustained push to shorten timelines and maximize the project’s impact.

Officials anticipate that the recent funding boost will allow builders to complete specific stretches in the Moscow and Vladimir regions within the current year, aiming for roughly 100 kilometers of newly advanced road length to come online. This rapid progress is tied to the broader objective of improving regional transport links and relieving congestion along key corridors.

The M-12 route forms a vital segment of the Europe – Western China corridor, a major federal initiative designed to open broader trade channels with Asian markets. The faster deployment of the highway is expected to enhance the speed and reliability of product deliveries, supporting economic activity and regional development across multiple provinces.

The operation and oversight of the M-12 are handled by Avtodor, the state-owned company responsible for toll roads in Russia. The highway stretches for about 823 kilometers and traverses eight regions, including Moscow, Vladimir, and Nizhny Novgorod, while also crossing Chuvashia, Tatarstan, and Bashkortostan. It then enters the Perm Territory before reaching Yekaterinburg, the administrative center of the Sverdlovsk region. The corridor is designed to be four lanes wide (two in each direction) with an intended speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour. The project carries an estimated total cost of 650 billion rubles, and the construction plan envisions completion in 2024, with possibilities for earlier finishing depending on progress and funding conditions. As the project advances, authorities emphasize the strategic value of the M-12 for national logistics and regional prosperity. The highway is expected to reduce travel times between key cities, support the movement of goods across a vast expanse, and improve safety for motorists traveling along this major east-west route.
