In markets where counterfeit products circulate, motorists face the risk of buying substandard antifreeze, which can trigger costly repairs. This concern was highlighted in a discussion with Sputnik radio, featuring automotive expert Maxim Rakitin, who serves as editor-in-chief of the online publication Quto. Rakitin emphasized how critical genuine coolant is to engine longevity and performance.
“Real antifreeze is a complex chemical compound that does more than cool the engine. It helps prevent deposits, provides lubrication for the pump that circulates coolant through the engine, and supports overall system reliability”, explained Rakitin. He noted that antifreeze comes in several colors, commonly green, red, and blue, but warned that many counterfeit products are sold as genuine coolant by unscrupulous sellers. In such cases, motorists may encounter nothing more than colored water, which offers little to no protective function.
According to the expert, using a low-quality solution can lead to damage across the cooling system, including the water pump, radiator, and expansion tank, where freezing could occur if the mixture lacks proper protection. Inadequate antifreeze can also contribute to engine wear and cracks over time, much like insufficient lubrication would. Rakitin advised consumers to purchase antifreeze from trustworthy outlets such as authorized auto stores, manufacturer-backed retailers, and large gas stations to minimize risk of counterfeit products.
A point raised by a legal professional also underscored the importance of checking license validity and compliance when sourcing automotive fluids in different markets, a reminder that consumer protections vary by region and that verified outlets help ensure product integrity.
