Moscow car sharing shows steady growth and benefits for residents
In Moscow, car sharing keeps posting positive results. For the seventh year running, city residents have logged more than 200 million trips, with daily activity around 140 thousand journeys. The system lets several drivers share short term rentals, helping ease road congestion and contribute to better air quality while limiting the growth of privately owned cars.
The service also plays a key role in multimodal travel planning. In 2021, users completed 570,000 rides using shared cars as part of integrated routes.
Car sharing safety
As popularity grows and more trips occur, the number of car sharing accidents has declined. During the first seven months of the current year, users completed 27.9 million trips compared with 26.8 million in the same period last year. The accident rate fell by about 12 percent (200 accidents in 2022 vs 226 in 2021). Injuries in traffic incidents dropped by 13 percent (272 in 2021 to 237 in 2022), and fatalities fell by 20 percent. Operators have increasingly adopted safety features such as driving style ratings that influence user tariffs, along with improved registration checks and enhanced vehicle rental verification at start.
Car sharing as a preferred option over private cars
Car sharing in Moscow has evolved beyond a simple nearby car option. It represents a new social model where residents share a common mobility resource that can rival or even exceed the convenience of owning a car. This shift is reshaping travel behavior, with time based pricing encouraging a more balanced approach to moving around the city and prompting travelers to plan trips more efficiently.
Compared with 2000, the share of 18‑year‑olds who want to buy a car immediately after getting a license has fallen by about 30 percent. Today, nearly half of young people no longer feel the rush to purchase a vehicle.

How car sharing evolved in Moscow?
The first car sharing services arrived in Moscow in 2015, starting with a fleet of a few hundred vehicles and a few tens of thousands of users. The fleet has grown steadily, and ride volumes have increased annually. For example, rides rose from about 44 million in 2020 to roughly 50 million in 2021.
Today, four operators operate in the city, offering vans, electric cars and premium models. In total, the car sharing ecosystem includes around 30 thousand cars and over a million active users, making it one of the world’s largest fleets of this type.
