According to official data released by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and summarized by TASS, the majority of drivers showing signs of intoxication involved in crashes were men. In nine out of ten such incidents, male drivers were at the wheel, underscoring a gender pattern in impaired driving outcomes.

The data also highlight age patterns among intoxicated drivers. More than one third of these crashes involved individuals aged between 30 and 39. Among last year’s drunken crash participants, those with secondary or secondary specialized education were notably represented, and about four in ten had prior administrative penalties for traffic rule violations. This indicates a history of traffic-related violations correlating with impaired driving incidents.

Educational attainment appears to have a protective effect in some instances. Drivers who held a bachelor or higher degree in 2021 did not record any traffic accidents while under the influence. This contrast suggests correlations between education levels and driving behavior under intoxication, though it does not imply causation.

A significant portion of intoxicated drivers had prior legal trouble. In nearly half of the cases, the drivers involved had previous prosecutions on their records, signaling a recurring risk profile among offenders on the road.

Employment status also features in the picture. Almost half of the drivers involved in alcohol related crashes were not officially employed at the time, while about one fifth held roles in trade and services. Vehicle type distribution shows that passenger cars accounted for the vast majority of alcohol related crashes, with motor vehicles and other categories representing smaller shares.

Regarding the scale of the problem, crashes involving drivers showing signs of intoxication included large numbers of impaired drivers, those who refused to be tested, and cases where drivers were recorded as intoxicated. Across the reported year, a substantial portion of traffic accidents were linked to drivers exhibiting signs of intoxication. The consequences were severe, with thousands of fatalities and tens of thousands of injuries reported. Among the fatalities, a sizable portion occurred in crashes where the driver was intoxicated. The overall picture underscores the major safety risk posed by driving under the influence and the importance of rigorous enforcement and preventive measures. These findings are drawn from official statistics and are presented with attribution to the issuing authorities. [Citation attribution: Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs data via TASS]
