When frost or black ice traps the windshield wipers

A car expert from Behind the Wheel, Mikhail Kolodochkin, explains the proper steps to take when the wipers freeze into icicles after a night of black ice or a hard frost.

Many drivers worry that the wiper motor is so powerful it will force the frozen blades free. In reality, forcing them can damage the rubber and even crack the window. Gentle handling is essential.

The wipers should be revived by hand without yanking them off the glass. Start by melting the ice with warm water or a dedicated de-icer. Boiling water must be avoided, as sudden temperature changes can cause the glass to crack. Once the ice starts to loosen, carefully release the wipers and inspect for any remaining ice around the blades. If ice remains, removing it completely helps prevent damage to the rubber band and preserves the glass surface.

After freeing the wipers, a quick check for residual ice is wise. Leftover ice can lead to scratched glass or a strained rubber strap when the wipers resume movement. A careful inspection helps maintain long-term wiper performance.
