In a public update on his Telegram channel, a representative from the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ explained the rationale behind installing continuously variable transmissions (CVT) in the Lada Vesta lineup. The official statement highlighted that the CVT fits very well into the Lada Vesta engine compartment. The reply noted that the engine can generate a peak torque of 170 Nm, while the CVT is engineered to withstand at least 180 Nm. Additionally, it is noted that the WLY CVT18 is commonly found in Chery vehicles, which has made the transmission familiar to many mechanics. While there have been reports of tapered bearings failures on some Chery models, experts do not anticipate the same issues for Lada, given the generally lighter operating conditions and different load scenarios in this application.
