By the end of 2023, the Avtotor facility in Kaliningrad is slated to start producing five new models from the Chinese automaker BAIC. This was announced by the plant’s press service, signaling a broader push to deepen collaboration with BAIC Motor in Beijing. The plan outlines the introduction of an innovative line of vehicles, including models powered by new energy sources, with the intention to roll out five additional BAIC models before the year closes.
The two companies confirmed their joint efforts to tailor the vehicles to the Russian market’s specific needs. In parallel, a localization program is planned for the coming year to integrate high-tech components locally. Russian-made parts are to be used in the assembly of all BAIC models produced at Avtotor, reinforcing domestic supply chains and import substitution goals.
Earlier in the year, Avtotor began production of the BAIC X35 and BAIC U5 Plus, marking a milestone in the collaboration. Overall, seven BAIC models are expected to be showcased in Russia, with a production target of roughly 30,000 vehicles by year’s end. This expansion reflects a strategic push to strengthen product offerings in the Russian automotive market and to diversify the local manufacturing ecosystem in line with regional demand.
