Recently, motorists from many regions of the Russian Federation noticed VAI inspectors on the roads. The abbreviation stands for Military Automobile Inspectorate – this is a structural unit of the Main Directorate of the Military Police of the Ministry of Defense, and the VAI is also part of the Russian Guard. The Autonews source told what powers these inspectors have and whether they can stop cars like traffic policemen.

The VAI and the traffic police often work together – for example, they carry out joint preventive actions “Seat Belt”, “Prevention and Safety”. In addition, VAI inspectors are called in to guarantee safety in the event of partial mobilization. At the same time, their list of powers has been outlined quite clearly, the source writes.

Responsibilities of WAI Inspectors

  • ensure the safety of the traffic of military vehicles;
  • monitoring compliance with traffic rules by drivers operating military equipment.

The VAI inspector can’t stop and check

  • civilian vehicles;
  • personal transportation of military personnel;
  • pedestrians.

If a violation of the traffic rules is detected by citizens, the VAI inspector has the right to pass on information about this to the police and can be addressed on the basis of their driver.

The attorney interviewed by the source also notes that the VAI inspectors also do not have the authority to issue subpoenas from the Military Registration and Recruitment Bureau, and while the possibility of their involvement exists in theory, it still seems unlikely. Much more realistic is the deployment of mobile groups directly from military registration and recruitment offices, including at border checkpoints.

  • Have you already found out whether they can mobilize if a citizen is deprived of his driver’s license?
