So, here’s a real-life situation for you: an SUV driver tries to turn around at an intersection.

How do you make this maneuver without breaking the traffic rules? Is a U-turn allowed in this situation? And most importantly, on which route?

In order not to break anything, it is important to pay attention to markup 1.1. It is applied where the dividing line breaks.

The traffic rules say:

Marking 1.1. Separates traffic flows from opposite directions and marks the boundaries of lanes in dangerous places on the roads; indicates the boundaries of the carriageway to which entry is prohibited; indicates the boundaries of parking spaces for vehicles.

Marking numbering corresponds to GOST R 51256–2011. It is forbidden to cross it!

Simply put, marker 1.1 separates traffic flows in opposite directions. Standing to its left means turning into the oncoming lane.

In this situation, driving on route A, the off-road rider ends up in the oncoming lane, which is prohibited within this intersection.

This is stated in paragraph 9.1(1) SDA:

On all two-way roads, it is prohibited to drive along the carriageway intended for oncoming traffic, if it is separated by tram tracks, a dividing strip, markings 1.1, 1.3 or format 1.11whose dotted line is on the left.

What’s the catch?

Appendix 1 to the SDA states that a sign prohibiting a left turn does not prohibit a left turn. Many drivers pay attention to the sign and forget the markings.

If you make a U-turn at this intersection along route A, you can be fined 5,000 rubles. or, in accordance with part 4 of Article 12.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, lose a driver’s license for a period of 4 to 6 months.

In the situation shown in the diagram, U-turns are only allowed along Path B. Keep this in mind when turning at similar intersections. The desire to cut a path of several meters and thereby save a few seconds of time can cause major problems. You will have to rely only on yourself.
