There was a huge cost difference between new and used cars 5 years and older. This allows you to consider unusual options: for example, buying two used instead of one new.
And even more radical: a complete restoration of the “killed” used with the replacement of the main units.
What’s the price?
For example, the new Nissan Terrano costs about 2.5 million rubles (it is easy to find more expensive, since there are Dusters for three million). And a five-year-old Terrano with a mileage of 200 thousand km will cost 700-800 thousand on the secondary market. The new F4R 2.0 engine costs about 300 thousand rubles. Automatic transmission DP2 – 200 thousand, subject to exchange for the old one (buying a new automatic or CVT is sometimes cheaper than repairing a seriously neglected one). For 200-250 thousand you can sort out the whole suspension and if necessary replace the steering rack. We will also throw in the replacement of consumables, elements of the exhaust system and the polishing of the inside and the outside.
If you don’t save, it all adds up to about a million. And two hundred thousand less, if we are talking about a 1.6 engine and a manual gearbox.
As a result, we get a five-year-old – according to the documents – Terrano, with a not very fresh interior, but with completely new and usable main systems. The benefit is well over half a million.
It sounds tempting, but only a few go this way. First, a lot of hassle – to find spare parts and units at the best prices and collect them in one place. Second, the body still remains “used”. Thirdly, after a few years the car will not sell much more expensive than its ilk.

There are a few more “buts”. Those who want a new car are usually not interested in used and even “obsolete” models. And those who are interested in used ones are not going to invest another million in them. It’s easier to take five-year-old Terrano as he is. In any case, eliminate obvious malfunctions and drive peacefully and happily for another five years.
Most importantly, the new car market is unlikely to remain unaffordable forever. If prices really go back to normal in a few years, it will now be unprofitable to buy new ones or spend money on a thorough restoration of old ones. The most reasonable thing to do is find a used car with strong bodywork and units with a reasonable residual resource.
