Kia Sportage IV (2016-2022) is a close relative of the Hyundai Tucson crossover, which appeared a year earlier. The suspension and many units are common.

The first batches of Sportage came from Slovakia, then they were assembled in Kaliningrad.

Restyling brought a new 2.4 engine, cosmetic changes and a few more electronic assistants.

Defects

  • Stiff and not very tenacious suspension.
  • The paintwork is sensitive to chips and scratches.
  • The clearance for a crossover is small – 182 mm.
  • Always dirty thresholds.

engines

FROM aspirated G4NA 2.0 (150 hp) more than 70% of the cars sold. A worthy unit, except for the history of bullies, whose appearance is attributed to crumbs of a collapsing neutralizer. Also, seizures occur during rapid acceleration to cold and working on dirty oil. The problem has been solved in particular with the introduction of extra oil nozzles in 2017.

The engine is noisy, prone to the accumulation of soot. The water pump does not always last long. The factory does not provide for reliving, but it is possible. With careful care, the engine runs more than 300 thousand km.

Parent engine 2.4 (184 hp) pretty good too. If you regularly change the oil and antifreeze, you will not experiment with the AI-92 and strong acceleration from the parking lot, there will be no scratches and tugs on the liners. Nozzles quickly clog, phase regulators often grumble.

A small part of the machines – with turbo engine 1.6 (177 hp). Direct injection, supercharging – AI-92 gasoline is unacceptable. Only compatible with robot. Maslozhor and coke, rather weak timing chain and tensioner. The source is about 200 thousand km.

Diesel 2.0 (185 hp) gives the most pleasant dynamics, but is extremely sensitive to fuel quality, expensive in itself and also in maintenance. It is considered very reliable and lasts up to 400,000 km, but there are still weaknesses – for example the glow plug relay and the crankshaft pulley. Dirty oil kills a turbocharger.

Transfer

The six-speed manual M6CF4 and automatic A6MF1/A6MF2 are proven, quiet and long-lasting. The eight-speed automatic A8LF2, combined with a diesel engine, is a fresh development, not really researched. The first years there were problems with the firmware, often the torque converter was replaced under warranty. Does not tolerate skidding – including emergency mode.

The 7DCT robot isn’t bad, but it’s prone to overheating and doesn’t work very well with the clutch, requiring less. And the total resource of 200 thousand km is not very large – not the best option when buying with mileage.

The four-wheel drive is realized by means of an automatic clutch. At speeds of up to 40 km/h, it can be blocked by force. There were no obvious weaknesses in the system.

  • With a suspension with a gentle ride up to 80-100 thousand km, everything is in order. In case of carelessness, get ready to replace the wheel bearings in batches. The wheelhouse begins to knock at 50-60 thousand. Sometimes this is the result of a worn damper bushing. If not, a replacement mounting with an amplifier is not excluded.
  • The source of the converter is unpredictable: it can be enough for 100 thousand, but more often for 60-80 or even 40. It seems that this is due to the floating quality of AI-92 gasoline. Users of G4NA motors give advice: preventively replace the inverter with a flame arrester. It makes sense, but it spoils the environment and is against the law.
  • There are many questions about the source of the front brake pads and discs – sometimes it’s all over by 10-20 thousand km.
