150 km/h – traffic police “for”! And who is against?

The head of the traffic police, Mikhail Chernikov, again supported Russian motorists who believe that the speed limit on our roads should be increased.

The speed on the roads must be divided. Our roads are better than European ones. Few curves, twists and turns. There are good straights of roads. Why not increase this speed to 150 km/h, subject to separation of traffic flows and subject to good weather conditions. On toll roads we have indicators that show if something is changing.

I endorse every word from the head of the traffic police. But, as they say, there are nuances.

What’s stopping you from going faster?

Now I am on a road trip through Russia and at the time of writing I have covered over 7,000 km. The route is as follows: Moscow – St. Petersburg – Petrozavodsk – Murmansk – Vologda – Yaroslavl – Kostroma – Kirov – Perm. And I can say that our traffic is organized in a very strange way.

First, there are many cameras on the roads. All the cameras are not in one of the popular navigation applications, you have to use two at the same time. It often happens that the camera is in one application but not in another. And vice versa. Rarely, but it happens when there is a camera on the road and both applications are silent. And even when I was hung up with these applications, constantly yelling, every 2-3 miles, that there’s a camera in front of the door, I managed to get four fines.

Secondly, I noticed that there are many cameras installed on parts of the road where there is artificial light, the road becomes wider, there are markings, that is, you can drive safely and quickly. However, a limit of 70 km/h can be set in these sections, causing the vehicle in front to slow down sharply after a warning from the navigator, which is not always safe. Yes, and it looks strange when the car suddenly starts to slow down “to the floor” in front of an empty space. And in the “forest” areas, where there is no lighting and cannot be, there are no cameras for many tens of kilometers.

Thirdly, we have long forgotten the issue of checking speed limits, especially when suddenly, for no apparent reason, a speed limit of 70 km/h (or even 50 km/h) appears at a distance of 200 meters, the camera stops , and then suddenly you can go hard again. Everyone understands why the movement is so organized, but they can’t do anything. That is, you can make 150 km / h along the entire road, but make several sections of 70 km / h and equip them with cameras – and a trip along such a highway will be very rewarding.

What do you have to do?

It is extremely important to set an even speed limit along the entire length of the road.

Second, of course, is the maximum speed. And the same toll roads of the Avtodor Group of Companies are good because the speed there is constant and does not change every kilometer. You left and you went. By the way, unfortunately this does not apply to the M-4 Don highway, there are many signs of temporary restrictions. Jerky speeds are very tiring and exhausting, and a tired driver is more likely to make a mistake than a driver who isn’t tired.

At first, when the entire M-11 highway was opened, motorists were surprised – I reached St. Petersburg and was not tired! And the box opens very easily – a smooth speed limit and an excellent road do not exhaust the driver. By the way, the number of accidents on high-speed roads is several times lower than on ordinary roads – with their ragged mode of motion and constant jumps of 90-40-90 km / h.

And here’s another quote from Mikhail Chernikov, which I also want to subscribe to:

With regard to the quality and layout of individual elements of the street and road network, we now see that it is possible to increase the speed to 150 km/h on a number of roads. This increases the capacity of the roads and the drivers lose their aggression. So if he can drive 130 km/h on one road section, but is forced to drive with a limit of 90 km/h, the driver will try to overtake this speed in sections without cameras. Therefore, it is better to agree with the driver right away. It’s even safer.

Everything is correct! If the traffic police manage to increase the speed limit, then I hope they take control of all these strange high-speed holes, especially the ones equipped with cameras.
