The issue became especially relevant after the production of simplified cars began in Russia. AVTOVAZ took such measures due to the lack of some imported auto parts. So cars started rolling off the assembly line with no air conditioning, airbags, abs. Cars are cheaper, but there was a question about their comfort and safety.
The answer to that was tried to give a professional racer Scott Mansell. He discovered whether a person can brake better than technology. Mazda MX-5 was chosen for the experiment with an empty weight of just over 1200 kg, which is comparable to the mass of the same Lada Grants.
Brakes with and without ABS
Scott first tested the car’s braking distance with abs. He accelerated the car to a speed of about 100 km/h. Under these conditions, the braking distance 34.7 meters.
Testing the power of the braking system of a car without electronics was first offered to an ordinary driver. There were a total of five attempts. The best braking distance was 39 meters. All others exceeded 42 meters.
What if it is a professional driver?
Five more attempts were made by the pro rider himself. From the first time he showed the result better than the previous driver. The braking distance was 40 meters. But to cope with the task better than an electronic assistant, he could not. The shortest braking distance 37.5 meters.
For example, even a professional driver couldn’t handle braking better than abs. The minimum difference was 2.8 m.
For an ordinary driver, the difference is even greater after several attempts.
