With terrifying regularity, reports appear of the next arrest of criminals who maintained an underground workshop for the production of counterfeit motor oil. The workshop is closed, the criminals have been convicted, but how many have they managed to sell their “products”? We talk about how to minimize the risk of buying counterfeit goods in our community on VKontakte.

Konstantin Vasilieveditor-in-chief of the site “Behind the wheel”:

Many manufacturers come up with different security systems for their products. For example, some oil cans have a QR code. Download a patented application on your phone – scan the code and get a response from the manufacturer regarding the authenticity of the purchased oil. How reliable do you think such a security system is? Personally, I have some doubts.

Others have gone further. Each such scan triggers a counter and shows you how many times this product has already been checked for you. 1 or 2 times – it’s not scary. The oil could be checked by an intermediary. But if the counter counted several dozen checks, then most likely you came across fakes.

Another way to avoid problems is to buy from official suppliers. For example, you have chosen a brand, then go to the official website and search for a list of distributors in your city. Buy from them.

How else to fight?

You, our readers, suggested a few more ways to protect yourself from buying fake in the comments to this post. We share some valuable thoughts.

  1. “As an option – buy in large supermarket chains– says Sergey Anisimov. “Big networkers buy in huge quantities, and there’s no point fiddling with little things — they take direct from suppliers — it ends up being even cheaper.”
  2. “I bought oil and saw from the packaging that it was fake. More than 8000 km went to a minimum, which is atypical for a car. After changing the oil to the original, everything returned to normal. The packaging had uneven seams, glue instead of the static sticker, well, etc.” – Sergey Reznikov shares his sad experience.
  3. “If the conversation is about 5w-40 (30) or 10w-40 (30), the easiest way to identify a fake is to pour oil into a glass and put it in the freezer. remains normal, then your oil is above average quality, the base is definitely synthetic or semi-synthetic. Such oils, even cheap ones, will not do much damage. If it freezes and starts to flow like jam, then something bad has been poured. Sergey Chekhorov notes.
  4. “If the oil is already in the engine, counterfeit products can be identified by indirect signs. the quick eclipse oil, or vice versa – it is light and it doesn’t get dark And also – an abundant porridge and jelly-like mass under the oil filler hole, on the dipstick no homogeneity of oil, foreign impurities, sagging or stratification are present. If there is an oil pressure gauge – usually a little pressure drops compared to normal. Maybe even a little engine sound change, he will work harder,” says Sergey Anisimov.
  • Modern low-viscosity oils contribute to increased power and fuel efficiency. But they are not suitable for all engines.
