Specialists of the German company Porsche were involved in the preparation of a redesigned version of the VAZ-2103 sedan, as well as the first front-wheel drive model of the Volga Automobile Plant VAZ-2108. In the first half of the 1970s, Porsche, commissioned by the Soviet company Vneshtekhnika, created an updated version of the VAZ-2103 with a new instrument panel, a modified body design without chrome trim and an original steering wheel. Serial VAZ-2103 with Porsche design was not mass-produced, but some elements of its decoration were introduced later on VAZ-2105 and VAZ-2107.
During the development of the Sputnik car family, the first prototype of the front-wheel drive car in the back of the VAZ-21011 was tested at the Porsche proving ground in Weissach. Also, engineers of the German company participated in the work on many units and components of the future VAZ-2108. As part of its work on the family of front-wheel drive cars, VAZ has received more than 20 licenses from Western companies.
