The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested autopilot systems from nine manufacturers: 11 of the 14 participating models received the lowest score, while none received the highest score. In this respect reported in the press service of the organization.
Models of brands such as BMW, Ford, General Motors, Genesis, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Tesla and Volvo participated in the research. Lexus’ Teammate system, available only in the LS sedan, received an “acceptable” rating but also harsh criticism. The GMC Sierra and Nissan Ariya received lower scores, while other self-driving cars received worse scores.
According to experts, the biggest disadvantage of the systems is the weak electronic control of the driver. For example, when the driver turns off the interior camera or takes his hands off the steering wheel, there may be no reaction.
Other disadvantages include the lack of gradual warnings if the driver is distracted and the inability to trigger emergency procedures if the driver does not respond to an alarm. The IIHS says that if the driver does not respond to the alarm within 35 seconds, the system should automatically brake the vehicle and send a signal to emergency services.
