Automaker Nissan Motor underpaid contractors to cut costs — the company owed nearly $26 million in total. reports Kyodo agency.

An investigation is underway in Japan against Nissan Motor, which has been underpaying its contractors for decades in breach of contract. The company owed money to more than 30 companies that supplied individual parts and assemblies to the manufacturer. Japanese officials said it was the largest violation in the country’s post-war history.

Nissan admitted its guilt and stated that it was trying to reduce production costs in this way. The company also claims that it has already paid its debts to contractors. However, Japanese authorities will issue a formal warning to Nissan, demanding that measures be taken to prevent such situations.
