It is harmful to warm up the engine at idle for a long time in the cold season. In this respect reported “Behind the Wheel” broadcast expert Alexey Revin.
According to him, the battery drains quickly in winter. A working battery will have enough energy to start the engine but will not charge until it warms up. It can accept very little current when cooled to -30 °C.
In addition, frequent starting of the engine and long periods of idling will not protect the engine against wear, as it reduces the performance properties of the oil. Also, if it is heavily worn, deposits will accumulate faster. To solve the problem, the expert recommends sometimes going on highways and burning carbon deposits by running the engine at 4-5 thousand revolutions.
Revin noted that it is still possible to start the engine several times if the car is left sitting all winter. It is best to do this during melting and run the engine for at least half an hour. But this is not a guarantee of saving the battery from discharge, especially if it is not new and the car has devices that consume a lot of energy when the engine is not running.
