A crack in the windshield of a car may be caused by a chip that was not repaired in time, a sudden temperature change, and in rare cases, a manufacturing defect or design feature of the car. Jan Heitzer, deputy chairman of the National Automobile Association, told socialbites.ca.

“A crack can form due to a sudden temperature change – when they start heating the glass with something to quickly clear it of ice, and it bursts. Cracks often appear due to mechanical damage,” Heitzer said.

According to him, if the vehicle owner does not pay attention to timely repairs, it may cause the crack to grow. Some damage can be opened in a workshop to prevent it from growing. Additionally, in some cars, the glass may crack due to the lack of body rigidity.

“This was different, for example, from the Mitsubishi Pajero III, which did not have sufficient body rigidity and whose glass burst due to impact when lifted,” the expert said.

He added that cracks in the windshield also occur due to manufacturing defects, but are extremely rare. Heitzer also concluded that the appearance of a crack may cause the layers of the glass to separate after very long use.
