For the use of devices that allow you to hide or change vehicle license plates, in Russia there is a fine of 5 thousand rubles or deprivation of rights for 1-3 months. Sergei Radko, lawyer of the Freedom of Automobile Choice movement, told socialbites.ca.
“The punishment is either a fine or deprivation of the right to drive, because if the license plates are equipped with devices that prevent them from being recorded, this is already an infringement. Even if they don’t work, they should sit on the car,” Radko explained.
The lawyer added that in this case there is no need to talk about the abuses of traffic police inspectors, since “translatable frames”, curtains and the like cannot accidentally appear in a car. He explained that if the room is covered with mud or snow, it becomes possible to interpret whether they appeared there on purpose or by accident.
For driving a car with illegible license plates, Article 12.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation. In accordance with Part 1 of the article, a warning or a fine of 500 rubles is issued. 12.2 of the plates. In case of deliberate concealment in accordance with Part 2 of the article, a fine of 5 thousand rubles or deprivation of driver’s license for 1-3 months is provided.
“There are examples of deprivation of rights due to the presence of a wife. If the inspector sees that the entire car is clean but the license plate is dirty, he can accuse the driver of deliberately hiding the license plate,” Radko emphasized.
Previously Moscow Dorogomilovsky Court prohibited Sale of devices to hide license plates on the Internet.
