The vehicle risks having its registration with the traffic police canceled if an engine with a broken or destroyed number is installed on it, as well as if it turns out that the unit was removed from a stolen car. Maxim Shelkov, head of the autocriminalist expert center, told socialbites.ca.
“When buying a contracted engine, you need to make sure that its number is printed at the factory and that it is not damaged or destroyed. This is a must. The model needs to be specified in its own block, as in the vehicle’s PTS and Vehicle Type Approval (VTA),” said Shelkov.
When purchasing a used engine, it is necessary to draw up a sales contract and request customs documents if the unit is imported from abroad. Also, the expert advised that if possible, you should check its license plate to see if it is wanted, because the engine can be removed from a stolen car.
“You must understand that the engine is a numbered unit and changing its markings can be punished by law in the same way as the body or chassis number. There is a check, engine numbers are checked in the traffic police,” Shelkov warned.
He reminded that installing a different model of engine in a vehicle will be considered a change in the design of the vehicle, and when the data is verified with the traffic police, refusal of registration of the vehicle will be guaranteed.
